A few illustrations from the last month;
This little guy is something I just did for myself, finished yesterday. Kind of just want to use gold gouache on everything now, it looks so good! Tempting to make a series of these with splashes of gold in all of them.
A made up lizard/gecko species, painted for a client who is having it printed on to plates and hung on his kitchen wall. Hopefully I’ll have a photo of the finished product soon! Not something I would usually draw, but the colour combination was fun and it was interesting to paint something that wasn’t primarily fur/hair.
And this was a fun commission from the band Solution Hours for their EP Try Again. They wanted some of my classic “girls” in black and pink – just my cup of tea! They were drawn on my iPad using procreate. Can’t wait to see them in action.
Right now, in this dark grey weather, bed is my happy place. I mean, it kind of usually is, but especially this month. Probably not the healthiest of statements, but we bought a new bed & beside tables recently and I’ve just wanted to spend all of my time in there!
I always think bedside tables are so personal, and give you a tiny insight of the owners personality. Take mine for example – constantly littered with books, notebooks, hand cream, lip balm & jewellery. Whereas Harrys is an oasis of calm – simply a glass of water on a coaster. I don’t know how he does it, but he’s definitely this minimal in general life, too.
Is anyone else’s bedside table as cluttered as their mind?
Wow, 2017 went by in a flash. I don’t know if it’s because I was busy (although I didn’t really feel that busy), or if it’s come to that point in my life where years are just going to go by faster and faster.
The first few months were spent working like a crazy person two interior design projects. I then kind of fell off the radar and struggled a lot for the rest of the year with some long standing mental health issues. My nephew turned 1, Harry passed his driving test and I made a bad hair decision that I’m still growing out (whoops). My mum got married, we visited Hastings a few times, my dad opened his own shop repairing and selling watches & jewellery (where I work part time) and we visited The peaceful Dunwich beach several times. I honestly think it’s turned in to one of my favourite places. I turned 27, took up running, gave up running (lol), my friend Emily got married and I bought my dream camera after years of saving. I left my job as an interior designer and, somehow, managed to find the strength to actually complete my New Years resolution of doing all of the physical and mental health related things that I had been putting off for many years. It was a huge deal for me, and I’m actually pretty proud of myself for going through it all. Everything is slowly getting back on track, and in December I even got three illustration commissions – so let’s hope that carries on this year!
In 2018 I’d like to get my portfolio/blog combo up and running, blog more regularly, and I have set myself a little challenge of doing monthly every day photo challenges. I’d also like to shop more ethically, get some more illustration/photography work and become a little more emotionally available to the people in my life.
It’s all started off pretty positively – Harry and I hosted a New Year’s Eve dinner for a few of our friends, we wandered around Southwold and squealed about all the puppies on the beach on New Year’s Day and got soaked in the rain, and now we’re in Hastings… getting soaked by more rain!
I’ve taken self portraits ever since I got in to photography at 16. Setting up my £5 tripod from Tesco (which only got replaced last Christmas!!??), adjusting the self timer and focus and sitting by myself in front of the camera. They were always emotion-based; I’ve always found it easier to get across how I’m feeling in photo or art form over talking or writing, and always felt a bit better after taking a bunch of photos. Some of them I’d put online, and others I’d keep for myself, worried that others would think I was weird.
Blogging changed how I approached self portraiture – it wasn’t about figuring out who I was or how I was feeling anymore, it was about the clothes I was wearing. I’ve never really been happy with any of the outfit-based self portraits I’ve taken. They all just seem to be missing something, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was just being narcissistic, which a lot of other fashion/style bloggers have struggled with and written about in the past. Most of the self portraits I’ve taken (apart from whats on this blog) have been thrown away or deleted over the years, either accidentally or otherwise, and as soon as I got in to a serious relationship I just kind of stopped taking them… but I’d really like to start again.
This blog has taken its twists and turns and changed over the years, and right now I can see it moving in a different direction – less of the style/fashion based posts and more about my photography and art work. I do still love playing with my personal style, and I’m sure it will probably still be apparent in my future posts, but there will be less of a sole focus on it. Basically I want this blog to be like an open journal. I have toyed with perhaps just starting a new blog, or opening *yet another* instagram account dedicated to photo journals/self portraiture – but I already have trouble keeping up with the 25685976 accounts I already manage for myself and other businesses, lol.
So, what you’ve been seeing and reading since the end of July will give you a rough idea of how its going to be from now on: Photo journals, self portraits, shoots, pages from my sketchbook and art pieces & processes (& maybe still the occasional outfit if I feel like it *wink*). I still worry, just as I did before, that certain people might think I’m weird, as there will be things that people won’t have seen me make and show before, but this is my *art* man! Hahah
I’m also working with Harry on a new portfolio & blog situation. It will be self hosted and no longer on wordpress.com, but its a little way off as yet…
Anyway! I’m really sorry if you’ve been following along for my personal style posts or beauty posts… but if you are in to photography and illustration/art, then I hope you’ll stick around! ♡
